Balance of 2011 and beginning of 2012

February 6th, 2012

Again, the time has flown by and it’s been several months since I’ve updated my blog.  Fortunately, much of the work I’ve produced has made it to my Recent Work gallery.  I think it’s time to add what I can to the projects and give my clients and creative partners credit for their efforts.

On the architectural front I was fortunate enough to work on a few educational projects.  I shot an arena for Smith Group (CMU Event Center), and an interesting project for IDS (the new University of Michigan Law School Commons).  In November, I returned to the Cranbrook Art Museum and photographed interiors of both the galleries and the finished Collections Building for the Smith Group.  On the residential side I photographed Lou DesRosiers‘ Minster Residence (very cool) and worked for the first time with Dan Clancy of Perlmutter-Freiwald, who handled the interior design.  I’ve also added to my Significant Detroit Architecture project and have shot both the historic Wayne County Courthouse and the Reading Room at UofM’s Law School.

In the automotive world there has been three projects of note.  Because of my involvement with the Concour’s d’Elegance I have had the opportunity to photograph some of the eclectic Crain Collection.  So far I’ve photographed eight incredible vehicles from a vintage Bugatti to a 1960′s vintage dragster.  I believe I delivered somewhere around 45-50 pieces of art from the eight days of photography.  Some of the images were included in the “Detroit Knows Cars” exhibit of automotive art held at the Chase Building and now up at the Automotive Hall of Fame.  In the automotive advertising arena I worked on the new brand from Chrysler, SRT8.  My portion of the project involved the technology story, as well as, several interiors of all the vehicles.  The interiors were once again shot outside, something I’m getting pretty accustomed too.  We shot a completely dismantled engine also, which was a first for me. Brett Veach, of Union Ad Works, designed and art directed this project.  I also worked on a nice Lincoln project for the fleet version of the MKT (they’ve resurrected the Towncar nameplate), shooting both studio exteriors and interiors with Michelangelo Cicerone and Ryan Swartz of Team Detroit.

Something that’s new for me is that my work has been selected by Graphis to be included in their 2012 100 Best in Photography Annual.  My first memory of the publication was while I was a student at RIT in the mid 70′s.  I’ve been inspired by it ever since so this is an incredible thrill for me.  The book should be out by the end of February and can be found at www.Graphis.com.

Summer 2011

It’s just shy of a week after the fall equinox and I see that the whole summer has gone by without any new entries! There was a lot going on and I’ll try to hit all the highlights.

The Lincoln project went quite well, we shot on an airport tarmac for nine days in Palm Springs. It was hot! (Although we only got to 110 a couple of days.) The images worked well and it was a great learning experience, since I was shooting car interiors outside for the first time. This natural light look has lead to another project, which starts next week for Chrysler.

Immediately upon our return, I was asked to shoot the new addition to the Cranbrook Art Museum for the SmithGroup. A host of projects followed, Henry Ford Village for Driven, custom furniture for Vogue Furniture, documenting the Shain Park redesign for Albert Kahn, two historic projects for my significant Detroit architecture series- the Fisher Building, as well as, the Wayne County Courthouse and an interesting Ford Performance shoot at Grattan Raceway for the new Boss 302 Mustang.

Also of note, I completed the poster art for the Indy Car commemorative display at the Concours of America. The new venue for the show works well (having moved to the Inn at St. Johns from Meadowbrook), I spent the day displaying my vintage car work in the “art tent” and have the distinction of being the first photographer to do so.

This summer I also worked for Automobile Magazine for the first time since their inaugural issue. I shot a couple of vehicles for their tribute to Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary. Ken Lingenfelter was kind enough to send a few vehicles my way and I shot experimental images of his Lamborghini Reventon, Bugatti Veyron and 599 Ferrari GTO. Architecturally, I worked on an arena project for Rossetti, a very interesting Detroit city block shoot for Bedrock Management and a Driven project for the Dearborn Country Club.

Spring Update

It’s been way too long between entries! Once again I’m on a plane heading towards LA and I’ve got some time to fill in for the last few months. The optimism from January was short lived. Not that I haven’t been busy but the quick pace slowed considerably. This did allow for time to pursue my significant Detroit architecture series with images from the Fisher Building to compliment my previous shots of the Belle Isle Aquarium and the Guardian Building. Next month I’ll be adding the FLW Turkel house to the series. In addition to the Detroit series I’ve taken another trip to Palm Springs to photograph mid century modern and contemporary architecture. Again it was in conjunction with the Palm Springs Photo Festival, although this year the workshop was lead by a remarkable photographer named Tim Griffith. Tim’s the photographer you call if you want the tallest buildings in the world shot, his work really is phenomenal! Thru Tim’s efforts we had the opportunity to photograph Lou Marmol’s Desert House, a pre-fab contemporary in Desert Hot Springs, John Lautner’s Elrod House and the Palm Springs Municipal Building, an interesting William’s design. Because of my involvement with the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation I also was able to shoot a beautiful William Cody design built in 1955 and then traveled to Joshua Tree to take a look at the Doolittle House, designed by Kellogg. Privacy is a big issue with the Doolittles (that’s why they live in the middle the desert) and I wasn’t able to photograph the house other than a snapshot from the street. You can see from the gate’s appearance that uninvited guests are discouraged from stopping in! I did have an alternate location planned for that afternoon so I shot the Monument house instead.
On the automotive front I’m involved again with the Concours of America (the new name of the Concours d’Elegance), this year I’m producing a poster commemorating the 100th running of the Indy 500. So far I’ve shot four out of five vintage Indy cars and should have the piece finished by the middle of June. I’ve shot the CTS-V recently as an studio experiment and most recently finished a two week Fiat 500 project, again shot in the studio. Right now I’m traveling out west for an interesting Lincoln project. I’ll be shooting interiors outside, the desire is to create a more natural look for the brand. I’m really looking forward to this, it’s something new for me.
The other big news of late is that I’ve teamed up with new representation. In addition to Kent Lund (Michigan) and Lee+Lou (California) I’m now represented nationally by VISU-ARTISTS. They represent a number of very talented photographers from around the world and I’m very excited to be part of their group. Also, if you happen to be in China, please contact Coco Xu of IAM, they now represent me and are based in Shanghai.
